Barry beauty gets ready to take on the world

Lucy Whitehouse

SOUTH Wales beauty Lucy Whitehouse is preparing to jet off to South Africa to take part in the 59th Miss World pageant.

Lucy, from Barry, was crowned Miss Wales during the summer and will be one of the contestants travelling to Abu Dhabi on November 10 and then on to Johannesburg where the competition will be held on December 12.

She entered the Miss Wales competition by chance but is now in the running to become the third Miss World from Wales, since Barry’s Helen Morgan briefly donned the crown 35 years ago.

Lucy, 21, who as part of her Miss Wales duties met soldiers returning from Afghanistan at a medal ceremony in St Davids earlier this month said: “I’m really looking forward to it.

“I’m hoping to take letters from children in Holton Junior School in Barry, to a school in Johannesburg as part of the school’s around- the-world pen pal initiative.

“Getting the chance to do this sort of thing is one of the joys of being Miss Wales. I am also delighted to be raising money throughout the year for The Joshua Foundation to upgrade a house in Fishguard that is a holiday home for children with terminal cancer.”

Lucy, a nurse at Barry Hospital, said: “My life has changed since I became Miss Wales. I have reduced my hours at the hospital and I have had a lot of engagements, met a lot of people and learnt a lot. It’s been a great experience.”

Lucy’s childhood ambition was to become a ballet dancer, but she only decided to enter a beauty contest earlier this year when she came across details for the Miss Vale of Glamorgan competition while surfing the net.

On travelling to South Africa, the former pupil at Barry’s Holton Road Junior School and Bryn Hafren Comprehensive said: “There is a chance I’ll meet Nelson Mandela. That would be a real honour.

“I’m not getting my hopes up too high about winning the competition, but I’ll certainly do my best.

“What I am really looking forward to is travelling around the world next year promoting the Joshua Foundation.”

Her mother, Denny, a former Vale of Glamorgan Woman of the Year winner, said: “The fairytale has happened for my daughter.

Miss World Scotland 2009: Noticias / News

Miss Scotland

I’ll teach you how to be World class

REIGNING Miss Scotland Katharine Brown hooked up with predecessor Stephanie Willemse... and she wouldn't have missed the chat for the world!

Kind-hearted Steph gave Kat a load of tips before the beauty queen jets off to South Africa for the glitzy Miss World contest.

Blonde Kat, 22, leaves for Johannesburg in just two weeks - and lapped up the advice.

The gorgeous duo chatted over coffee at Glasgow's Rogano as Steph shared her experiences of representing Scotland in the prestigious pageant last year.

And she warned that 5ft 11ins Kat can expect a LOT of attention.

Bikini babe ... Steph in South Africa and in final

The 20-year-old told her: "Out of 108 girls in South Africa last year there were about 10 blondes.

"I think that, and your height, will work in your favour.

"When you arrive go straight to the stylists to tell them how you want your hair and make-up for the final. Take rollers with you to give your hair lots of volume."

But the fashion tip took sporty Kat by surprise because she admitted she'd NEVER heard of rollers. She gasped: "Rollers? What are those? Can you teach me how to use them?"

Steph also told her: "Make sure you have a pair of gold heels that will go with anything because you'll be given a designer dress to wear and you'll have no idea what it looks like until nearer the finals.

"And don't forget to pack your tiara because even though I didn't need mine it's better to have it just in case.

"As soon as you arrive there are photographers waiting for you to get off the plane so make sure you look perfect.

Miss Scotland

Kat who's got the dream ... she wants to win

"In the mornings at breakfast I had rollers in because you wanted to be prepared at all times - you can be asked to go for a shoot at a minute's notice.

"And remember to stock up on fake tan because the other girls all have exotic complexions and you need to glow."

Tennis coach Kat hopes to wow the Miss World judges with her RAP song... but Steph warned her that she would only have a few seconds to impress them. The 20-year-old, from King's Park, Glasgow, said: "You get 30 seconds - you might want to think about going straight to the best part."

Kat is preparing for the month-long trip and the grand final on December 12 but Steph warned she'll be too busy to be homesick.

She added: "You won't really have the chance to feel homesick.

"It's vital you smile at all times and don't complain if they ask you to wear something you'd rather not because they can't stand whiners."

Kat added: I just can't wait now - I'm so excited."

THIS year's Miss World contest is being held in Johannesburg, South Africa, for the second year running.

The 120 contestants' month-long tour of the country will start in Johannesburg on November 14 and take in the state-of-the-art World Cup stadia before heading to the Eastern Cape.

They'll be treated to trips to the beach and an amazing safari before the hard work really starts.

The glittering final, which takes place on December 12, will see last year's 20-year-old winner, Ksenia Sukhinova from Russia, hand over the crown.

Since launching in 1951, Miss World has become a global phenomenon.

Supporters claim it increases tourism and generates economic development in the countries where it has been held.

The Miss World final is broadcast in over 180 countries, and seen by more than ONE BILLION viewers, making it the world's most-watched annual event.

Miss Puerto Rico red hot favourite to win Miss World 2009

Bookies Paddy Power have slashed the odds on Miss Puerto Rico Jennifer Colon being crowned Miss World following a surge in support for the stunning brunette.

The twenty-one year old beauty who boasts fine art and classical music as her ‘special interests’ is now the red-hot favourite to win the pageant at 11/10.

Miss Puerto Rico’s closest contender in the betting is Miss Mexico 23 year-old Perla Beltran at 5/1. Other beauties in the bookies top ten include Miss South Africa at 10/1, Miss India at 14/1, Miss Slovakia, Miss Aruba and Miss Philippines at 16/1 and Miss Malta and Miss Croatia at 18/1.

Meanwhile Miss England and niece of world champion sprinter Linford Christie, Rachel Christie is 20/1 to go the distance while Miss Ireland Laura Patterson is further down the list at 50/1 with Paddy Power to be crowned this year’s Miss World.

Sharon McHugh, spokesperson for Paddy Power said: “All the betting so far seems to be for Miss Puerto Rico. Unfortunately it’s looking unlikely that Laura will follow in Rosanna Davison’s footsteps to bring the crown home.”

The winner of Miss World will be announced on Saturday 12th December from Johannesburg South Africa.

. Buy nothing without trying it on first and ensuring that it fits the way it's supposed to.
. Always hit the sales rack first.
. Always buy your size; don't sacrifice comfort for beauty.
. If you're not sure, don't buy it, it will probably end up hanging in your wardrobe - never worn.
. Be careful when taking advice from the sales assistants, "...Love their help but they may tell you it looks nice just to sell the frock."

Miss World 2010 relocation scandal brewing

Miss World 2010 relocation scandal brewing

Dong lai
A banner hung on the Thoi Son islet, Tien Giang province.

VietNamNet Bridge – Hoang Kieu, General Director of the US-based RAAS group, which will organize the Miss World 2010 pageant in Vietnam, informed Khanh Hoa province that the pageant will be moved to Tien Giang province.

Hoang Kieu’s dispatch to Khanh Hoa authorities stated that RAAS would ask the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism to hold the Miss World 2010 finals in Tien Giang and not in Khanh Hoa.

Khanh Hoa Vice-Chairman Le Xuan Than confirmed that he received RAAS’ dispatch in late September and refused to comment, noting that the province may contact the media to discuss its reaction later.

A revealing timeline of events

Miss World Organization Chairperson Julia Morley surveyed Nha Trang in Khanh Hoa province on July 9 2008 and met with Hoang Kieu to sign a deal to hold Miss World 2010 in Nha Trang. They announced their agreement on July 13.

In October 2008, Hoang Kieu, Morley and Khanh Hoa authorities met with the media to talk about the event. Khanh Hoa province also received approval from Deputy PM Nguyen Thien Nhan.

To better serve the pageant, RAAS submitted the 15 kilometer “Flower Road” project and
requested the construction of an ecological tourist site to be named “A Thousand Underwater Stars” in Dam Bay of Nha Trang.

Some scientists and environmentalists protested the latter project, arguing it would damage the sea environment. Other experts cited the plan’s redundancy, since Nha Trang has an 8000-seat stage in the Diamond Bay Resort and has sufficient hotel space already.

Hoang Kieu asked Khanh Hoa People’s Committee in November 2008 to repeal both plans, but remained committed to organizing Miss World 2010 in Nha Trang.

On June 8, 2009, Hoang Kieu and Morley still publicly agreed on the Nha Trang site.

However, on October 24, Hoang Kieu was present at the Thoi Son ecological tourism site to oversee construction of facilities. Many banners advertised the upcoming Miss World 2010 pageant.

However, on October 24, Hoang Kieu was present at the Thoi Son ecological tourism site to oversee construction of facilities. Many banners advertised the upcoming Miss World 2010 pageant.

Quick shuffle

Nguyen Ngoc Minh, Director of Tien Giang Department of Culture, Tourism and Sports, confirmed that his province had approved the Hoang Kieu’s Tien Giang Tourism JS Company’s ecological tourism project to serve the Miss World 2010 pageant.

Tien Giang authorities agreed to ask for official government permission to hold the event in Tien Giang at the request of Hoang Kieu.

Minh revealed that Hoang Kieu explained the move by claiming that expenditures would be huge in Nha Trang because they would have to rent everything for the pageant. Meanwhile, as Chairman of the Tien Giang Tourism JS Company with land on Thoi Son Islet, Hoang Kieu could invest in the land to both serve the pageant and benefit his company.

According to a manager of the Tien Giang Tourism JS Company, they bought 17 hectares of land on Thoi Son islet in My Tho city to build a tourism site for Miss World 2010. This site will include 500 bungalows in southern style, a restaurant of 1000 seats, a 5000-seat stage, shopping malls, and an exhibition center.

Thoi Son is over 1200 hectares and is an ecological tourist site in the Mekong Delta. This site welcomes hundreds of thousands of foreign visitors a year.

Khanh Hoa People’s Committee Office’s Chairman Huynh Ngoc Bong said that RAAS claimed it wanted to move the pageant to Tien Giang to help them implement its goal of abolishing slums.

Tien Giang’s Nguyen Ngoc Minh said that Hoang Kieu has agreed to an October 2010 deadline. If the government allows Tien Giang to host the Miss World pageant, then the province will support these plans.

“One year is not long but not short for preparations. The most important thing is the government’s decision,” Minh stated.

“Hoang Kieu has committed our province to complete the construction of all necessary facilities to serve the Miss World pageant, otherwise, contestants and guests will stay in HCM City,” Minh remarked.

“The distance from HCM City to My Tho is only 70km. At that time, the HCM City – Trung Luong highway will be finished so transportation will be easy,” he added.

At present, My Tho, Tien Giang’s capital, has only one 3-star hotel and one ongoing 4-star hotel project, which may not be completed by late 2010.

A beauty contest often includes a swimwear show on the beach. If Miss World 2010 is held in Tien Giang, contestants may have to model swimwear on the Tien River, which is polluted from My Tho industrial zone waste water.

Minh revealed that RAAS Chairman Hoang Kieu, a Vietnamese American, and Tien Giang authorities had not gone into such details yet.

When asked why Hoang Kieu, the RASS chairman, is also the chairman of the Tien Giang Tourism JS Company, a state-owned firm, Minh replied, “I don’t remember how many percentages of shares of the Tien Giang Tourism JS Company are held by Hoang Kieu. I only know that he has bought nearly all this company’s shares.”

“This is part of the province’s equitization policy and anyone who has the money can buy the shares,” he added.

At the beginning, this project had a total area of 17 hectares. The investor, Tien Giang Tourism JS Company, is said to buy an additional 14 hectares to construct additional facilities for the Miss World 2010, including the 400 luxurious bungalows, a 1000-seat restaurant, a 5000-seat theatre, and shopping malls at a cost of 300 billion dong ($17.6 million).

However, according to Saigon Tiep Thi, a group of three investors, including Hoang Kieu, bought 97 percent of the Tien Giang Tourism JS Company’s shares in 2007. Hoang Kieu’s project on the Thoi Son Islet doesn’t include the purchase of an additional of 14 hectares of land.

-Con mi gente, mis amigos y mi familia, soy Carmen Laura y no he cambiado.

Mi trabajo lo he visto recompensado.
